IN a Warrington performance which lacked creativity and flair against Villeneuve Leopards one plus point to be taken was the form of Lee Briers.

It was Briers' second start of the season in the No. 1 shirt and he made a hat-trick look easy. But with the departure of Kevin Walters his days at full back look to be over.

Despite grabbing the man of the match award at full back, even before Walters left he was still keen to have a crack at stand off, his favoured position.

Briers, speaking after the game on Sunday, said: "If the opportunity arises for me to play stand off again I will grab it with both hands but my main concern is securing a starting place in the team.

"If that means playing full back it is fine.

"I have enjoyed playing there so far. It is a lot different from being up in the line.

"One good part of the position is that it frees me up from a lot of tackling which means I am less tired when I get the ball in my hands.

"I can only remember having to make one tackle against Villeneuve but that is testament to the rest of the lads' defence."

Briers went over the whitewash three times, coming into the attacking line on the inside of the centre and dummying and stepping his way through.

Coach Darryl Van de Velde gave his views on Briers' performance.

Van de Velde said: "There was nothing outstanding.

"He comes up with a couple of tries, he takes the ball up well and he reads the game as good as anybody."

One part of Briers game which was not up to scratch was his goalkicking. He only managed two successful conversions from seven attempts and the Welsh international was his own worst critic.

He said: "I was shocking!

"I can't put my finger on why I was so bad because I went through the same routine I always do."

Rob Smyth began the season with the responsibility of the goalkicking

duties but that changed hands when Briers returned to the starting line-up.

Briers must be aware that Van de Velde has Smyth in mind if things do not improve but he seemed unperturbed.

Briers said: "I don't feel under pressure. Whoever is the best person will be kicking."

Briers voiced the views of the entire camp when he commented on the team's performance in the quarter-final.

He said: "It was poor but some parts were good.

"We probably need more match practice and we were a little unprofessional."
