A RIVALRY between two of the Mid-Cheshire League's oldest clubs was renewed on Saturday as Knutsford won a game of typically few chances at Clay Lane.
Countless times they have been on the receiving end of narrow losses against their Altrincham rivals, but it was Knutsford who stole the show this time.
On the day they had eight front-line players unavailable due to injuries, suspension and holiday.
Player-manager Stewart Dow returned and gave Knutsford a more dangerous threat and target in attack.
They worked hard but also provided some delightful football as they pulled the home side around for long spells.
The decisive goal came on 23 minutes when skipper Paul Hartley propelled the ball forward to James Habershon.
He took advantage of a lapse in concentration by the keeper and scored from the edge of the 18-yard box.
Within a couple of minutes Craig Stevens almost doubled the lead but his shot was pushed onto the woodwork by the Linotype goalkeeper.
The home side's most dangerous player, John Rodgerson, had a couple of glimpses of goal, but each time dragged his efforts wide as Knutsford deservedly held on for a hard-earned victory.
Knutsford's exciting winger Paul Edwards, who recently took Camell Laird to the cleaners in their epic Cheshire FA Amateur cup quarter-final, has been snapped up by Altrincham.
Edwards was with the Manchester Road club for a short time but his performances quickly attracted the interest of the Unibond League side for whom he made his debut this week.
On Saturday Knutsford entertain Crewe FC. Kick off 3pm. They also play Middlewich Town at home on Tuesday at 6.15 pm.
