YOUNG and old painted the town red on Friday when they took part in wacky fund-raising activities for Comic Relief.

Rowing fanatic Mike Crossley made it all the way to Majorca without moving an inch and flew into the record books for Comic Relief. The 44-year-old rowed a massive 1,000 miles for the charity, the equivalent distance of Warrington to Majorca on his trusty rowing machine.

Children at Barryfield Nursery made biscuits with cherries as red noses and created song sheets to sell to their parents while youngsters and staff at Callands Nursery on Gresford Close raised £118 by wearing fancy dress.

A group of Padgate High School pupils who make up rock band Fixxer performed for students at the school and at St Aelred's in Newton-le-Willows, charging 30p for tickets. Staff at the Spar Shop on Longshaw Street, Dallam, raised £410 by wearing their pyjamas all day and put on red nose day bonus ball draws with the help of Carl's Unisex Hair Design.

Classes 13 and 16 at Long Lane Primary, Longford, organised face-painting, make-up and singing lessons and a cake sale while staff and children at Bloomings Pre-school Day Nursery got dressed up, sold cakes and collected coppers, raising almost £150.

Staff at Total Fitness on Winwick Road clubbed together to cycle more than 200 miles for the fund-raiser and were hoping to raise as much as £2,000.

Six staff and customers at the White Hart Pub on Sankey Street brought the Big Brother phenomenon to Warrington by being locked in an upstairs conference room and filmed for a downstairs screen. Customers paid to vote out a room mate each hour.

Staff at Dr Napier's surgery on Manchester Road dressed up as famous faces while pupils at Brook Acre Primary School raised more than £300 to see their year six teacher Steven Saunders have his head shaved in assembly tomorrow, Friday.

The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy held special lessons in four community centres in the town and Jeffrey Rogers staff wore their underpants outside their clothes and following a red nose drought resorted to home-made noses.
