Aspull RUFC...6
Warrington RUFC...13
THIS victory at a cold and windy Aspull ensured that Warrington Rugby Union Club will finish as a minimum second in the league.
This guarantees a play-off game to win promotion to North Two Division.
This Saturday the eagerly awaited re-arranged fixture against Birkenhead Park, the current league leaders, will be played at Bridge Lane, kick-off 3pm and victory for either side will be a giant step forward to gaining the one automatic promotion slot.
There is intense bitterness between the two clubs as Warrington feel Birkenhead Park were responsible for the abandonment of the game back in November.
Warrington were a little off-key on Saturday but Aspull never came close to scoring a try. Warrington's greater fitness showed through to gain what in the end was a comfortable win.
The blustery conditions made open play difficult and by half-time the only scores were those provided by the boot of the goal kickers.
After a series of attacks near the Aspull line No.8 Gary Tees plundered over for a deserved try that Andy James converted.
Although Warrington remained in control there were one or two worrying moments as the referee played an amazing 11 minutes of stoppage time during which James added a further penalty.
