WORK is about to start on the creation of a green oasis, complete with a lake, in Birchwood.

The beauty spot will form the centrepiece of Birchwood Park Estates, the district's main business area.

The lake and surrounding landscaped area will replace the 'hill' which was made up of rubble and leftovers from building work which has taken place at the site.

It is hoped that the £500,000 project will boost community use of the park.

The centre complex features conference facilities, a restaurant and a lecture theatre and is soon to be improved to include a gym and creche. It also recently hosted its first wedding reception and is now being offered free to community organisations for one occasion per year.

Director Nick Hynes said: "If any group would like to hold its AGM or committee meetings here we would be happy to discuss its requirements. We see Birchwood Park as a centre for the whole community and not just for businesses."

And the new threequarters-of-an-acre of green space will be no exception.

The terrace of the centre will have steps down to the lake, which will be surrounded by lots of planting and foliage. Seating areas will be created for employees to enjoy the fresh air during lunchtime and breaks.

Jonathan Walsh, of Birchwood Park Estates, said: "We are very keen to make this a place where people want to work, but we also want to be part of the community. We see this as a major public open space."

The lake will be filled by an artesian well, subject to Environment Agency approval, and it is hoped that it will quickly become a haven for wildlife.

"Nature will take its course," Mr Walsh said. "We have been told that fish will come there via birds, so in due course we will have them living in the lake."
