WINWICK Pre-school Nursery has impressed Ofsted inspectors.

The education watchdog has issued its report following an inspection in November last year.

And the general consensus is that the nursery has good standards across the spectrum and has made good improvements since the last inspection.

Based at Winwick Leisure Centre on Myddleton Lane, the nursery has 30 children, aged between two-and-a-half and five, on roll from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.

The report finds the children are making good progress towards the early learning goals, particularly in personal, social and emotional development, spoken language and mathematics.

Staff provide a warm, friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the standard of teaching overall is good.

They have a good secure knowledge and understanding of early years curriculum and provide a wide range of challenging first-hand activities and have high expectations.

Quality of learning, personal, social and emotional development, communications, language and literacy, mathematical development, knowledge and understanding of the world and physical and creative development are all praised in the inspection.

The report states: "The pre-school has made good improvements in provision since the previous inspection. Attention has been given to enriching the role-play provision by providing more materials to support the development of reading and writing.

"Staff have introduced paper, wax-crayons, books, magazines and posters to assist with this area."

It adds: "Children now have more opportunities to independently participate in activities that use discarded materials, at least once a month."

Although the report states there are "no significant weaknesses", points for improvement include raising the children's awareness of more cultural aspects and different festivals and their independent use of glueing tools and materials.
