A PLUCKY pensioner chased a handbag thief and hailed down passing cars in a bid to catch him in Old Hall on Monday morning.

The 70-year-old woman was walking along a footpath parallel to Cromwell Avenue and Lander Close at 11.30am when the man snatched her bag.

She felt a nudge from a man who sneaked up behind her and grabbed her bag then ran off across Cromwell Avenue towards Cavendish Close and Gregory Close.

But the woman ran down the street after him, waving her arms in the air to attract passing drivers. A few cars stopped, but the thief had already escaped.

Det Con Kate Connelly, of Warrington CID, says that a number of drivers may have spotted the man in the Cavendish Close and Gregory Close area. She would like to speak to anyone who saw him running off with the bag tucked under his jacket.

He is white, 5ft 7in, aged 20-30, of medium build with broad shoulders and short, brown hair. He was wearing a dark donkey jacket, plain dark trousers and dark shoes.

Anyone with information can contact DC Connelly on 01244 613833.
