I HAVE read with interest, the letters in Points of View and have noted a parallel which I find disturbing.

Clr Lafferty in his letter stated that at the Development Control Committee meeting on March 14: the chairman of the meeting displayed a bored and intrusive attitude to the Woodlands Drive petitioners. The same chairman on that particular evening adopted an identical approach to the petitioners from Stockton Heath, which at times bordered on contempt. Those petitioners were there presenting a strong comprehensive case for MODIFIED plans for the development of Victoria Square. Regretfully after hearing statements from the floor, for and against the proposal, the chairman excluded any further participation by the petitioners, thereby depriving them of an opportunity to challenge any statement by members of the committee. Without bothering to give even the charade of an unbiased summation of the evening's proceedings, the chairman called for a quick vote. At no time did he acknowledge the objections of the Parish Council, English Heritage, Stockton Heath residents and some of the members of his own committee. The vote when it came approving the proposal had all the hallmarks of a pre-determined decision and was railroaded through despite all opposition.

Clr Roughsedge says we are following blindly, the misinformation being distributed by the leaders of the objection campaign. That is not the case. We are quite capable of thinking for ourselves.

Councillors are elected by the people of the borough of Warrington, and the various parishes, to represent their constituents. Whatever the personal views of the councillors are, if they are opposed to the majority of the wishes of their constituents, then those personal views must be subjugated. The Parish Council of Stockton Heath rejected the Hilal Development proposal, by 10 to one, yet Clr Roughsedge a member of that Council is still campaigning for acceptance.

If the current members of our councils, parish or borough are not prepared to support their constituents' wishes, then we shall have to find people who will. The May elections are not far off.
