VISITING vicars, medical matters and life on the railways were the top stories at Green Lane School.
The year 10 special needs pupils are taking part in the Guardian's Newspapers in Education scheme and have had fun putting together their own publication featuring the breaking news of the day, as well as working their way through specially designed reading passports which have tasks for every aspect of newspapers.
Teacher Alan Murray said: "The Newspapers in Education co-ordinator John East came in to school for a workshop and we made up our own paper featuring the things that were happening that day.
"This included an item on the vicar, a story about one of the governors who used to work on the railways and medical matters from the chairman of governors who is a doctor.
"That day was also Comic Relief day so everyone on a picture was given a red nose!"
The scheme helped the children look at everything which appears in newspapers, including stories, advertisements and even the TV pages.
And Alan says it has proved very successful.
"It's gone really well," he said, "and the children have enjoyed it.
"This is the first year we have taken part and we would certainly do so again."
