I READ with amazement the article, which quoted council officers stating that it found high public satisfaction with street cleaning and the cleansing services.

I have yet to speak to any person who considers that the town's roads, hedgerows and shrubberies are kept clear of litter and rubbish to an acceptable satisfactory level.

Almost weekly there are letters to the Guardian complaining of the above, requesting that the council becomes more proactive in keeping the town clean.

Do the council officers and respective councillors not see the rubbish decorating the shrubs and bushes that border our roads? Have they not visited the town early on Saturday and Sunday morning to see how all the previous night's visitors have trashed it or viewed the litter surrounding the bus station and car parks?

Are they not aware that the town has a reputation for being dirty and litter strewn, and a large majority of its citizens are embarrassed and dismayed by it?

Obviously not. I assume that they are taking an ostrich eye view of the situation.
