WARRINGTON Wolves re-signed Gary Mercer on Friday and threw him straight into the starting line-up against Castleford Tigers on Saturday.
New Zealander Mercer, who had been the player coach of Halifax Blue Sox, replaced Tawera Nikau, whose wife Letitia had died on Thursday.
Mercer, even at the age of 34, showed he has lost none of the hunger, enthusiasm and energy which made him a fans' favourite at Wilderspool between 1989 and 1992.
The back row forward has been signed until the end of the season.
Gary originally came to England in 1987 to play for Bradford Northern before going on to play for Warrington and Leeds before joining Halifax as a player and then taking on the role of player/coach in July 1999.
Ming, as he his known to teammates, has represented his country at all levels. He gained 21 full Test appearances and played in three Challenge Cup finals, including for Warrington in 1990.
Wolves coach Darryl Van de Velde said: "Gary brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm to the team.
"He is a strong tactical player and with his experience as player/coach at Halfiax he brings depth to the squad. He will be an asset to the team."
Gary said: "It is good to be back at the club. I have always had a soft spot for Warrington. When the opportunity arose to come back I jumped at the chance."
