CREWE Boxing Club was back with a bang at Nantwich Civic Hall on Thursday night.

Team Singleton were determined to put on another top show for their established home support and they didn't disappoint the capacity crowd.

Some fine performances saw Crewe ABC pick up five victories out of seven bouts, meeting top notch opponents from clubs across the country.

After three superb schoolboy bouts, Crewe lightweight Lee McBarron gave his club the best possible start, facing Arrow's Mike Bryan.

The local lad made an excellent start to his three one minute round contest, throwing good combinations to keep a tall, rangy opponent at bay.

Bryan was really starting to feel the body shots as McBarron wrapped up a tidy first round.

It looked like more of the same during the second as the Crewe boxer picked off Bryan who relentlessly pursued him, enjoying some success with fierce bombs.

This spurred the visitor on and both traded heavy blows during an exciting third round that McBarron edged with cleaner shots.

A majority decision greeted the rightful winner in McBarron with scores of 59-58, 59-58, 58-60.

Next up for Crewe came James Rodgerson and a devasting finish to an explosive contest.

Facing Shane Davies from Maelor ABC, Rodgerson went straight for his light-middleweight opponent from the bell, and embarked on a frantic assault.

Bewildered, Davies decided his only reply was to go for broke but he couldn't compete against the pressure.

A standing eight count was followed by an awesome right hand that forced another count and then the referee into an early stoppage.

It was an impressive display of power.

You could be sure that more of the same was on the way as Crewe light-middleweight Chris Jackson entered the ring.

Last time out in Nantwich, Jackson was involved in toe-to-toe action and this was no different.

The tall home fighter looked to use his size against Jamie Zaslov of the White Rose who found an equaliser through his bull-style approach, cutting off the ring.

The crowd roared as both traded a glut of heavy shots throughout three exhausting rounds.

An excellent fight, but Jackson lost a majority decision, 59-58, 57-60, 58-59.

A standing ovation greeted the man who scooped Best Boxer of the Night award, back in February.

There was an obvious size difference as Geoff 'Bud' Wright looked up to Liam Kavanagh of Widnes ABC but the Crewe lightweight didn't let it bother him.

After both took time to size each other up, Bud threw caution to the wind and took the fight to Kavanagh, with some solid combinations proving enough to take the round.

The Widnes lad altered his approach in the second and turned hunter as Bud used his boxing ability on the back foot, firing jabs off the ropes.

Great reflexes kept him going during the third round, as Kavanagh finally caught up with Bud, forcing him to take two standing eight counts.

But the Crewe fighter hung on to clinch a majority verdict to the delight of the crowd with scores of 59-58, 59-58 and 58-59.

One of the club's busiest boxers, Russ Lawton, used recent experiences to full effect against George's Jason Leigh.

The local welterweight opened with some good shots and continued to use his reach advantage to close Leigh out of round one.

Lawton continued his methodical approach throughout two and three to wrap up a deserved unanimous decision, scored by the judges, 59-58, 59-58, 60-57.

Crewe's very own 'Geordie' Ian Clyde received some of the biggest cheers of the night during a brave attempt against fellow light-welterweight, Duane Jenkinson.

Clyde made an electric start to the first of four two minute rounds and looked like making it an early night but his muscular opponent from Terry Allen Unique ABC gradually ground his way back in.

Both threw fast punches as round two opened but Jenkinson's strength established a telling advantage and carried him through the next two minutes as Clyde began to clinch.

Jenkinson finally tired during the final round and Clyde started to land more frequently, almost finding the KO he needed.

The judges made it unanimous, with scores of 76-79, 76-79

Karl Minshull closed the night off for Crewe in fine fashion.

The light-welterweight maintained an impressive workrate throughout three excellent rounds against George's John Berks.

Minshull almost had him out several times and coasted to a unanimous decision, scored 60-57, 60-57, 59-58.

Lee McBarron landed the best boxer award, crowing another superb night for local boxing.
