RESIDENTS living near a newly-planted bed of roses are being asked to help deter hard-hearted thieves.
Congleton in Bloom volunteers planted a series of rose trees along the Canal Street boundary of the town's community garden.
The pink climbing roses will eventually provide a colourful trellis-style screen at the top end of the garden in Lawton Street.
The work is also part of the town's drive to win its section of this summer's Britain in Bloom finals.
Congleton is representing the North West, and Congleton in Bloom is looking to wow the judges with a series of floral displays.
The theft has angered Congleton in Bloom project manager Frank Holt, who is organising the floral show.
He is now urging residents who live near the rose beds to ring him if they see any further roses being stolen.
"We are working really hard to make that area attractive, and have spent £500 on trees and shrubs," said Mr Holt.
"The roses which were stolen cost £3,50 each, and we have no more money to replace them.
"People have been saying how nice the garden is looking, and the roses were stolen because nothing was found thrown around.
"If anyone sees anyone stealing roses from the garden please can they ring me."
He can be contacted on 275199.
