ELDERLY people in Warrington are being offered the hand of friendship in the form of a new group which seeks to increase their social options.

Contact the Elderly aims to provide companionship for old people who often feel isolated and alone in their homes.

The group works by organising small groups of volunteer drivers to pick up and take guests to a host's home one Sunday a month for tea. Groups are kept small so that they can chat together in relaxed and comfortable surroundings.

Jenny Broadhurst, regional development officer of the group, said: "It's really heartening when people are willing to spare the time to do something to help the elderly people in their community.

"Our members are usually well over 70 and are unable to get out without assistance, so a regular meeting one Sunday a month means so much to them. It's something for them to look forward to."

The new group is appealing for volunteers to drive the elderly and become Sunday hosts. Anyone who thinks they could assist should contact Jenny on 710014 or e-mail her on ctegm@clclan.freeserve.co.uk
