THE countryside around Warrington will be closed to walkers until Christmas unless a vaccination policy against foot-and-mouth is put in motion, according to the town's Liberal Democrat MEP.
The warning from Chris Davies follows the talks he has held with senior officials of the Lake District and Peak District National Parks.
Mr Davies said: "If vaccination is carried out I am told that our hills and countryside could be open within a couple of weeks.
"But if the Government refuses to vaccinate, then our countryside will be closed throughout the summer.
"In fact, senior officials cannot suggest a date when it will be opened. It may not be until Christmas or even into next year."
Mr Davies has contacted the Prime Minister about the situation. He added: "It is simply a matter of Government policy and it could and should be changed."
