A WINSFORD man had a lucky escape after waking to find his bedroom on fire.

The man, in his late 20s, who lives at Vauxhall Way, woke early on Good Friday to find his mattress on fire.

He quickly ran from the house and called the fire brigade.

Two engines attended the fire which is believed to have been started by a hairdryer that the man was using to keep himself warm.

The fire destroyed the mattress and caused smoke damage to the rest of the house.

The man, who has only recently moved into the house, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but did not go to hospital.

Sub Officer Chris Mannix said: "Only the correct appliances should be used for a specific task and these should be serviced regularly.

"If you use electric or gas on a payment meter, make sure that you keep the reserve topped up ensuring that incidents like this don't happen."
