WARRINGTON Athletics Club carried on their winning form in the first cross country since the start of the foot-and-mouth crisis.

In Sale Harriers' Priory Woods Relays on Monday Warrington's under 11 boys' 3x1,800m relay team of Daniel Cliffe, Adam Green and Matthew Jackson led from start to finish to achieve what the club has not done since 1989 - win the Summerfast Shield and against the big Manchester and Liverpool clubs!

Daniel also picked up the fastest lap trophy for his 7.37mins with Matthew Jackson the third fastest in 7.43. The B team of Chistopher Whitfield, Michael Williams and Adam Orr put up a spirited performance to finish 8th.

The under 13s boys also fielded two teams. The A team were in second place after laps by Sean Myers and newcomer Jonathan Kirk. Karl Steinneger, running the anchor leg, faced stiff opposition and the team finished seventh. The B team of Jonathan Strange, Simon Pickersgill and Mike Pemberton worked solidly throughout to finish 11th overall.

For the first time Warrington's girls entered the event and, despite many of the squad being away on holiday, showed a lot of character.

In the under 11s Heather Williams came home first with what was to be the second fastest time of the day, 8.05. Hannah Tart kept the team in contention with third place after two laps, but the time gap was not sufficient for a gutsy Hayley Derbyshire and the team finished fourth behind Liverpool, Stockport and East Cheshire.

The under 13s team of Heather Roberts, Faye Lawless and Karina Royden finished in ninth place.
