THE Anderton Boat Lift has been under the spotlight with other boat lifts across Europe.

With funding from the European Commission, owners of the lift, British Waterways, joined forces with lift owners in France and Belgium to carry out studies on the monuments.

This included historical research, looking at educational opportunities and visitor experiences at the sites as well as spotting conservation methods for the maintenance and renovation of the lifts.

Project co-ordinator from British Waterways, Tania Snelgrove, said: "The boat lifts became reality due to Edwin Clarke who designed the first at Anderton in 1875, then moved to Europe to design lifts at Fontinettes, France and at La Louviere in Belgium.

"The exciting history of the lifts, and the planned reconstruction of the Anderton Boat Lift lead to a wish to extend the cultural and technical links between the lifts, and so the partnership was born."
