FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a blaze at a flat in Northwich in the early hours of last Wednesday morning.

The flat on Keeper Walk, Chesterway was severely damaged and two people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

A spokesman from the fire brigade said: "They were alerted by two smoke detectors and were able to escape prior to the arrival of the fire service.

"There was evidence of candles in use - one on the TV - this is a possible cause for the fire."

Three fire appliances attended the scene and four breathing apparatus were used.

Following the incident, a warning has been put out to the people of Northwich.

Candles should never be left unattended and should be placed in proper holders away from soft furnishings and pets.

Firefighters are also encouraging people to regularly check their smoke alarms, have a night time safety routine, including closing doors, emptying ash trays and unplugging electrical appliances, and to know the escape route they would take.
