HEALTH Groups in the borough are celebrating this week after a specially organised Women's Health Day proved an enormous success.

Held at Nantwich Civic Hall it featuring everything you can imagine to do with Women's Health and Lifestyles.

The day was organised by Jean Morris and Val Lithgow from After Breast Care (ABC), a group based at Leighton Hospital which gives care to women after they have had breast cancer operations.

Macmillan Nurses were also involved and there were displays ranging from breast cancer and health to lingerie and aromatherapy as well as stands to help you give up smoking, make-up stands and information from the South Cheshire Private Hospital and Community Health Council.

Macmillan nurse Janine Baker explained the importance of the day: "The aim is to raise awareness about general health and the importance of breast care.

"It is not that women do not look after their health it is just making them aware of what is available and the importance of health," he added.

Borough Mayor, Cllr Barbara Bickerton officially opened the day and took the chance to sample a few of the health saving tips.

The event was also used to raise money for the After Breast Care Fund which has, in the past, raised money for a new scanner at Leighton Hospital amongst many other projects.

The Care group was founded in 1986 by Jean and has raised over £1.5 million since it began fund-raising back in 1988.

The group offers support to women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and have to go through the trauma of an operation.

Jean explained: "It is just nice to be able to talk to other ladies who have gone through the same operation, it makes people feel more at ease."

Jean added that the day's fundraising events had also been very popular: "We have pledged to raise £100,000 and at the last count the total was £85,000 which is to go to things such as volunteers who sit and talk to patients."

The group is also in the process of setting up a relaxation room at Leighton Hospital.

The trio expressed their thanks to all the volunteers and organisations who have helped to make the day a success.
