AN Appleton teenager is to attend the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award presentation and garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Sarah Smith, of Kingsbury Close, has taken part in stamp collecting, four days of camping and walking on the Isle of Skye, and yoga to gain her award.

She has also spent a week at the University of Surrey for an introduction to chemical engineering.

Speaking about her experiences, 17-year-old Sarah said: "I was flooded out of a tent at 5am after staying in it all night so that it did not blow away.

"I also ran a chemical plant, although it was the size of a large room, with three others and I was the leader. I later won a prize for being the most developed individual and as a result I was awarded a scholarship for the University of Surrey."

The awards day will be held on July 17.
