POLICE are warning of 'hook and cane' type thefts where criminals are stealing car keys without entering houses.
The Congleton and Vale Royal division is aware of thieves poking hooks, canes or similar implements through letterboxes or cat flaps and hooking and taking any keys lying around.
A spokesman said: "This kind of offence isn't just occuring in our division, it appears it is occurring all over the North West.
"It also appears that they are mainly targeting premises where it is evident the occupiers have high powered vehicles."
Police are advising that both house and car keys are kept well out of reach and ideally out of view.
Also remember never to leave a spare key in a hiding place like under a doormat, in a flowerpot or inside the letterbox, as these are the first places a thief will look.
