POTENTIAL grandmasters from the County High School, Leftwich, have made it to the regional finals of the world's largest chess tournament.
Around 50 year seven pupils contested in the initial heats of the British Lane Chess Challenge which has attracted 48,000 children from 1,430 schools.
And Leftwich had 19 pupils with qualifying scores good enough to reach the regional final on Saturday.
The individual boys' winner was Daniel Mashiter, while the individual girls' winner was Amy Carson.
Teacher David Sandles said: "Amy's success is remarkable because she only learned to play since joining this school."
The pupils who qualified were: Simon Alcock, Holly Anderson, Jamie Arnold, Amy Carson, Rachel Lamb, Daniel McCoy, Lydia Norwood, Ruth Penney, William Abell, Lucie Barnes, Benjamin Bedford, Matthew Billinge, James Brogan, Robert Capelle, Andrew Carlile, Rachael Clark, Mathew Fairhurst, Daniel Mashiter, Adam Newman.
