WARRINGTON'S cricketers are celebrating a century for a legendary past player by commissioning a special beer in his memory.
The club, based at the town's sports club in Walton, have teamed up with the Coach House Brewing Company in Howley to celebrate the 100th birthday of Lancashire's first choice wicket keeper George Duckworth who died in 1966.
The beer, officially named Duckworth's Delight will be available across the town on May 9th, George's birthday.
George was well known throughout the cricketing world for his loud appeal when behind the stumps, touring Australia three times and South Africa once. After a long playing career he managed three Commonwealth tours of India and became the England scorer and baggage master.
Mike Cornelia, secretary of cricket at Warrington Sports club, which celebrates its 150th birthday this year said: "We thought it would be appropriate to have a beer named after George as he used to be landlord of the Walton Arms. We suggested the name to Coach House and they liked it and agreed to have a local artist design a caricature of George for the pump clip.
"George had a loud and powerful appeal and we believe the beer will be the same and appeal to many of the town's cricketers."
