AROUND 150 families in Warrington and surrounding area are waiting to hear if Warrington Hospital retained organs from their parents or children.
The hospital trust admitted keeping 66 lungs in the past for establishing cause of death involving industrial diseases which was revealed in the Guardian in February.
Around 1,000 NHS trusts have now been given the go-ahead to release information to people who made inquiries about whether organs from relatives were retained following post-mortem examinations.
The agonising wait for answers follows weeks of extensive searches, checks and audits in hospitals and medical schools to provide fully comprehensive and accurate information to people following publication of the Alder Hey report on January 30 this year.
