It Had to be You -

The Great American Songbook

THERE'S no doubt about it - Rod Stewart's voice ain't what it used to be.

And although there are critics out there who would arguably say that he never had a fantastic voice anyway, the inevitable effects of such a long-lasting rock 'n' roll lifestyle have never been more evident than on his latest album, a collection of mid-20th century, American classics, which he croons away at to his heart's content.

Having said that, Rod's slightly weary vocal is perfect for these classic love songs, which he sings with style and confidence.

Yes, they've all been done before, but this time around These Foolish Things, The Very Thought of You, and The Way You Look Tonight (one of my favourite songs of all time) are like a breath of fresh air, rather than a last attempt at topping the charts.

It's difficult to pinpoint who will actually buy this CD - staunch fans of the ageing rock star might be disappointed at this "change in direction".

But for the hopeless romantics out there, it's ideal for those quiet, winter evenings when you just want to sit by the fire with a glass of wine. Sentimental maybe, but go on, put your feet up and relax - you might be pleasantly surprised. Hayley Tutt
