THE quality of street lighting in Nantwich is so poor that a local councillor has started a campaign to improve the dim situation.

Jean Pearson, who represents Wellington Ward, is the latest councillor to speak out about the poor lighting problems facing people in Nantwich after yet another resident contacted the Guardian to tell of their misery on the streets.

"Some parts of the town have had lights out for long periods, for example the car parks by the market and the bowling green, in the centre of the town have been out a long while.

"I am calling for urgent action because many people are fearful of using these car parks at night because they are so dark. If other street lights are out in my ward I am asking residents to contact me," said Cllr Pearson.

Having read the story of pensioner Mary Oakley, of Coppice Road in the Guardian a couple of weeks ago, who has been asking the council to fix the light outside her house for over two months, Roger Savage said his light has not been working for 16 months.

Mr Savage, who lives at Birchin Lane, first encountered problems with the light outside his house in August 2001 and despite numerous visits from council maintenance men, it is still out of action.

"It started when the council came to put a new road sign up and they cut through the electrical cables and we lost all the power in the houses.

"Although they put my electricity on, they didn't sort the light out and I have been without it since a year last August. Their latest attempt to fix it had ridiculous consequences.

"They put a new cable in, but all that resulted in was the light across the road from my house being on 24-hours a day but mine still doesn't work," he said.
