THE deputy headteacher of Weaverham High School has announced his retirement this Christmas after dedicating 26 years to the school.

Stan Williams joined the school in 1976, following a period of teaching at St Nicholas High School in Hartford.

He arrived when Angus Selkirk was headteacher and has since outlasted his successor George Studd and seen the arrival of another headteacher, David Charlton, in January 2000.

During his time at the school, Mr Williams has been responsible for the pastoral support of pupils as well as the induction of newly qualified and trainee teachers.

It is estimated that nearly 5,000 pupils have passed through the school while he has been deputy headteacher.

Headteacher Mr Charlton said: "No job description could ever portray the real contribution of Mr Stan Williams to Weaverham High School.

"He has been responsible for building up the Parent Teacher Association and for launching the charitable Weaverham High School Appeal Trust. Neither of these have ever been specifically part of his job description.

"During his time at Weaverham, the school has expanded considerably. Stan Williams will be very hard act for anyone to follow."

The school will mark the retirement of Mr Williams with a gala dinner at the Fourways Inn at Delamere on Thursday, December 19, and by presentations from colleagues, parents and Cheshire County Council in recognition of his long service.

A new deputy headteacher will be appointed early in the New Year, who will commence the post in September 2003.
