ONE of Warrington's favourite sons and a man with more than a passing link with the Wire have passed on their congratulations following news of the Wolves' new stadium.

Warrington Wolves club captain Lee Briers met up with ex-Stone Roses legend Ian Brown, who lives in Lymm, and Manic Street Preachers bass guitarist Nicky Wire following the Manics' gig in Manchester last week, at which Ian Brown was the support act, and the stadium was a hot topic of conversation.

Briers met up with the pair back stage to present them with the new Wolves shirt.

Welshman Wire, who is known to follow Warrington because of the traditional Wire nickname, said he is looking forward to watching a game at the new stadium.

He added: "It's really good news that the stadium has been given the go-ahead, it has been a long time coming and I'm sure it will be good for the sport and for the town."

Brown, who regularly watched Warrington back in the 70s and 80s with his father, still comes to watch.

He said: "It's great news about the new stadium. I have some very happy memories of the place, so I'll be sad to see the old ground go."
