WORK is set to start on a major new programme to breathe new life into an area blighted by decades of heavy industry and tipping.

Around 5,000 trees and shrubs will be planted as part of works to beautify land close to Gatewarth tip.

Topsoil will be deposited on domestic rubbish and ash tipped on the site which, with the planting, will form a wildflower meadow

The initial works will involve creating a new footbridge and improvements to the access road in Barnard Street.

Contractors Cheetham Hill Construction are currently setting up on the site and the operation, which is expected to take around 14 weeks, will begin early in the new year.

More than £760,000 has been awarded to the borough council for the initiative by the Northwest Development Agency.
