A WIDNES man who was dismissed from work on health grounds has won nearly £1,000 from his employers, thanks to Halton Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).

He called into the CAB office in Lugsdale Road to seek help filling in a form for incapacity benefit.

Trained adviser Tommy Allen offered him a benefit check to make sure he wasn't missing out on any other entitlements.

Struggling

He found out that the man had recently been dismissed from work on health grounds and was struggling to get holiday pay still owing from the company.

With the help of employment caseworker Tom Mylott, Tommy investigated the case as much as he could.

They discovered the man did have a case for unpaid holidays and pay in lieu of notice - but also realised he had less than one week left in which to make a legal claim.

They helped him complete the relevant form that very afternoon and, after a few weeks, his former employers had agreed to pay up in full and decided not to pursue money they said the client owed them.

The man was left nearly £1,000 better off!

Mr Mylott said: "It's amazing that the client very nearly missed out altogether. Had he come to us a week later, it would have been too late because the time limits for making employment claims are very strict.

"But what is even better is that Tommy was able to discover the problem even when the client was not aware he could get our help.

"If we hadn't offered the client a full benefit check and then followed everything through the client would have been left with nothing."
