A WINSFORD girl has done the town proud by making it through to the grand final of the Britain's Brainiest Kid television programme.

Corrine Kinvig, from Cedar Grove, in Winsford, saw off some brainy competition in the semi-finals at the famous Elstree studios in Borehamwood to make it through to the grand final of the ITV1 show.

Many viewers in Winsford watched the 12-year-old Verdin High School pupil finish second in her semi-final on December 9 after an article in the Guardian two weeks ago alerted people to the fact that the town had a budding genius in its midst.

And now Corrine will take her place on the podium along with 20 other members of the country's youthful intelligentsia, with the winner being revealed on New Year's Eve, when the final airs at 6pm.

Corrine said: "I had to get up in assembly at school on Monday and the headteacher told all the other children that I would be taking part in the final, so I think a lot of people at the school will be watching.

"The hardest category in the semi-final for me was science as it is not my best subject.

"But some of my friends still told me that when they watched they only managed to get two of the questions right."

Verdin's headteacher Neil Dyment said: "We are very proud of her - Corrine is a very bright girl and she seems to have really enjoyed the experience.

"We have definitely got some very clever children at Verdin High School and in Winsford.

"I'm not surprised that Corrine has done so very well in the contest - I think she wants to be a lawyer when she is older and I am sure she will do that too as she definitely has the ability and talent."
