THE focus of Cheshire Constabulary's drink drive campaign this year is to encourage the public to share information with police and target those still ignoring the drink drive message.

This message is simple -RATS - Ring And Tell Someone.

The campaign will be complemented by extensive targeted policing using information from the phone line and information already known to the police to focus in on specific areas and those known offending.

The message is clear - drinking and driving will not be tolerated in Cheshire.

During Christmas 2001 the Ring And Tell Someone (Road RATS) line, took a total of 36 calls from the public.

Of the 30 calls pertaining to Cheshire, the information provided resulted in two drivers giving positive breath tests.

Last Christmas, 23 people throughout the County were arrested for drink driving during the period of the campaign compared to 24 people arrested during the same period in 2000.

Insp Brian Rogers said: "We are urging you if you have any information about individuals who have consumed alcohol and then chosen to drive to ring and tell someone by calling the RATS free phone number on 0800 358 1131.

Meanwhile Cheshire's Road Safety Unit is encouraging drivers to become designated drivers.

Cheshire's nightclubs are helping to promote the campaigns by offering free non-alcoholic drinks to the designated driver.

Clubs involved are The Kookaburra in Winnington, The Klub in New Road, Winsford and The View, Overton Hill.
