HISTORY was made at the site of Warrington Wolves' new home yesterday, Monday, when the first sod of land was cut in an official ceremony.

Many dignitaries including Warrington North MP Helen Jones were on hand for the symbolic cutting of the sod ceremony - although as reported in last week's Guardian actual work started on the development last week.

Others in attendance for the task on the old Tetley Walker Brewery site included Clr Mike Hughes and Wolves head coach Paul Cullen.

The stadium will be built at the southern end of the site, with the store at the northern.

The 14,000 capacity ground will be built by Glasgow-based Barr Construction which boasts Southampton's St Mary's Stadium as one of its most recent success stories.

Construction will also begin on the Tesco Extra store, which is set to be one of the largest stores in the country.

Planners at Warrington Borough Council have confirmed that the store will be allowed to open when the stadium is ready for opening - although this will not necessarily be on the same day. It is expected that Tesco will be open for business in time for next Christmas.
