GUNNERS bid farewell to Widnes this week as they handed over Peelhouse Lane TA barracks to the Kings Cheshire Regiment.
The restructuring of the reserve forces and the conversion of 103 Lancashire Regiment Royal Artillery from javelin air defence to field artillery means that the volunteers no longer need the Ubique Barracks.
Lt Col David Iffland of the Royal Artillery handed over to Lt Col Simon Hammond, MBE, of the Kings Regiment at a ceremony. The Royal Artillery's association with Widnes will not be severed as close links have been established since the barracks opened in 1985.
Halton Council granted the Royal Artillery the privilege of marching through the streets with drums beating, bands playing, colours flying and bayonets fixed. The 103 Regiment Royal Artillery (volunteers) continues to recruit soldiers. Call 01744-22255.
