BOTH Halton Corporation and Moorfield Casuals were relegated from the first division last year, so this was their chance to put a bit of silverware in their trophy cabinet in the Commander Wilkinson VC Cup Final.

Batting first on a good wicket, Moorfield got off to a solid start with Danny Naughton and Corpy old boy, Tim Wearden, playing some good scoring strokes.

Wearden was the first batsman to go, caught behind by Tabb on seven.

Moore came to the crease to partner Naughton and after taking a very risky second run, was run out having scored seven.

Mike Harrison, in at four, didn't survive long, he was caught out by Alan Jackson at mid for three.

Howie Fox came to the crease to help Naughton push the score along in what looked like a high scoring innings total but Naughton, trying a little too hard, was stumped on 45 by wicketkeeper Tabb. Ball came to the crease to help Fox, but by this time the momentum was gone and these two batsmen lasted the rest of Moorfield's innings to take the score to a respectful 112 for four wickets.

Andy Findlater was the pick of the Corpy bowlers, taking two wickets in his five over spell, with Jennison taking the other wicket in his spell of five.

After the interval Corporation came out to try and overall Moorfield's target with Simon Tabb and Peter Findlater opening. Tight bowling from Ball and Bri Cafferty made sure the runs were at a premium with the fielders responding in kind. Findlater's wicket fell to a good caught and bowled by Ball having only scored two runs.

Jennison in at three was there to make some runs and this he did pushing the ball to all parts of the Beaconside Road ground. Tabb was next to go caught by Ball, bowled by Cafferty for seven.

Nickson came to the crease to help Jennison and to try and increase the run-rate, which they were slowly getting behind with and with a change of bowlers this was never going to be.

Naughton clean-bowled Nickson for three and this brought another Wearden to the crease, this time Ste.

He helped to further the Corpy's cause but he too was clean bowled, this time by Fox having scored seven.

The more wickets that fell, the more Corpy panicked, English helped Jennison but not for long, a good caught and bowled by Fox put paid to his innings when on 10.

Jennison was rapidly running out of time and partners and trying once too often to reach the boundary, found the fielder, he was promptly caught having scored a valuable 32 runs for the Corpy.

Al Jackson, run out for four, never bothered the scorers. With Andy Findlater, six, and Garner, one, the not out batsmen in the Corporations final total of 94 for the loss of seven wickets.

Fox was the pick of the Moorfield bowlers, capturing three wickets in his five over spell with one wicket for Cafferty, Ball and Naughton.

League president Peter Knowles thanked Widnes CC for the use of their facilities. Eddie McNicholas, a stalwart of the mid-week league and a good all rounder for Ditton BR CC for many years, presented umpires John Alderton and Dave Spencer.

Cafferty and Fox were praised for their bowling, Naughton and Corpy's Jennison for their batting, but mom went to Danny Naughton for his match winning 45.
