OULTON Park set up a semi-final Murray Smith County League Cup clash with local rivals Winnington Park after making light work of Widnes this weekend.

Controversy ruled for a short spell in an intensively competitive match at Little Budworth, which saw a Widnes team - supported by a large and vocal crowd - lose a man to a rare "obstructing the field" ruling.

After losing the toss, Oulton Park were put in to bat and always seemed likely winners - despite not being able to shake off a determined Widnes team until the last 10 overs.

Kent and Leech (12) got Oulton Park off to a good start, clocking up 66 before Widnes took the first wicket.

When Kent was caught out for 80, Oulton Park were at a confident 151-2.

Then Widnes managed to take three quick wickets, with Bentham run out for a duck, but Davies managed to score a respectable 55no and bring Oulton Park's total to 255-6.

When Widnes stepped up to bat, the difference between the two sides became clear.

Jones made an outstanding catch to take Catterell for 8 - and that was the first of three.

Inspirational

Thomson and Wilgose were inspirational - but skipper Hurdley (66) and Landry (40) put on 73 before Landry was given out for "obstructing the field" when he hit the ball a second time as keeper Bentham attempted to catch the ball behind the stumps.

After the controversial call and loss of Landry, Widnes slipped to defeat with Oulton Park running out Tabb for a duck and eventually fielding Widnes all out for 204.

The quarter final victory has set up a semi-final clash away at Winnington Park on Sunday, August 31. The other semi-final match is between Chester Boughton Hall and Bowdon.
