IN response to the letters regarding 30mph on Liverpool Road, I was appalled that anyone who is old enough to vote would come out with such stupid comments.

As a driving instructor for more than 15 years, I can assure you that you will not stop at 30mph any shorter than 75 feet. This is not some magic number thought up by driving schools or police etc.

If drivers were forced to read the Highway Code after passing their test they would not go around saying stupid things like 'the council should put up speed signs with all the money they get from fines'.

If a road has streetlights the speed limit is 30mph unless signs state otherwise.

As a driving instructor, I often use Liverpool Road and my students do stay at 30 not because I tell them to, but I would like to think that they do it because they want to get home safely.

I think reminding them that if they get six points on their license within the first two years of passing their test, they will automatically have their licence taken away and will have to apply for a new provisional. This will also mean they will have to take the theory and practical test again.

What a pity the drivers who made these comments are not forced to do the same.

Let me also remind you that there is a school on Liverpool Road and a sports field. The other week I was driving along and a youth ran out into the road after being chased by two lads on bikes. I am certain I could not have stopped in time if I was doing more than 30mph.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind all these readers that the speed limit on the Ford Road is 70mph because it is a national speed limit and a dual carriageway and I would be grateful if they would not slam on the brakes when only doing 50mph, my students have to travel at 55mph on a test or they risk being failed.
