HALTON Hospital is set to start taking some 999 calls again.
The move comes after six months of refurbishment work on Ward A1.
During that time only heart attack patients needing treatment at the coronary care unit could be admitted.
As of yesterday (Tuesday), ambulances could take suitable patients with a range of symptoms to Halton if a bed was available.
The refurbishment of A1 as an assessment ward is part of a programme of changes to the way Halton Hospital manages emergency medical and surgical conditions.
This follows recommendations by the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI).
Ward A1 provides a dedicated setting for emergency medical and surgical admissions. This means that patients go directly into a bed and treatment can commence immediately.
Meanwhile, urgent discussions on the re-opening of two intensive care beds at Halton General Hospital are continuing.
The beds closed on July 1 due to a shortage of anaesthetists, worsened by staff holidays.
Patients requiring intensive care treatment will continue to receive this at Warrington Hospital.
