BURMA medal holders from across the region descended on Northwich last weekend to take part in an act of remembrance.

The event, which took place on Sunday, marked the 58th anniversary of the Victory in Japan Day (VJ Day) and was attended by war veterans from across the north west who had all served in Burma during the Second World War.

This is the third time that the Northwich Division of the Burma Star Association has been asked to host this prestigious event.

More than 150 Burma medal holders marched in a procession from Winnington Park Recreation Club to St Luke's Church for a service of thanksgiving before returning to the club for an afternoon of dancing, music and a whole host of activities.

Burma Star medal holder and treasurer of the Northwich branch Ernest Leather, aged 83, said: "The day went quite well, however we were a bit disappointed with the turnout, there was not as many people as last year.

Service

"However, everyone enjoyed themselves, the service went down really well and everyone had a great time afterwards with nearly all going home with a prize."

The event was raising funds to buy Christmas presents for the widows of those that served in Burma. It is not yet known how much the day raised.

On Friday, August 15 at 2.30pm to mark the actual VJ day Burma Star medal holders will be laying a wreath at the Northwich Cenotaph and anyone who wishes to join them and pay their respects are more than welcome to attend.
