THE body of a man lay by a busy Runcorn road for weeks.
The man was found in a field by Chester Road last Thursday afternoon, August 8.
Farmer Richard Whitlow came across the corpse while combining his field, near the turning for Hill Top Farm Road, Preston-on-the-Hill.
Police say the dead man had been there for 'at least several weeks, if not longer'.
The post mortem was delayed due to the condition of the body and the results were inconclusive.
Police in Runcorn say they are confident they know the identity of the man but formal identification by dental records may be carried out in the next few days.
Mr Whitlow, of Whitlow and Sons, made the discovery on farmland belonging to Manor Park Farm at around 4pm.
The man was lying on his back and wearing a hooded top.
It is understood Mr Whitlow initially thought the body was only a bag.
Police sealed off the scene and carried out a forensic search until around 9pm.
Inquiries are ongoing but the death is not being treated as suspicious.
