AS record temperatures swept across the country, the Junior Academy braved the heat at Fartown against a Huddersfield side that had hammered Wakefield and Warrington in their last two outings.
Despite being the better side for most of the match the Vikings were undone by making too many unforced errors and lost 28-32.
As the thermometer approached 100 degrees the Vikings got off to a great start when Mike McDonald dived over in the corner, the impressive Anthony Houghton added the extras.
Errors gave the Vikings too much defence to do and Huddersfield scored the next 20 points, but Houghton dived over just before half time to give the Vikings a 10-point deficit to make up in the second half.
This they managed to do when first half scorers McDonald and Houghton both got their second and Michael Bowles went over.
However, a penalty and a late score from Huddersfield meant the two points stayed in Yorkshire.
With injured and suspended players set to return the Vikings still look a good bet to make the play-offs.
l Widnes are in action at Widnes RUFC on Sunday, August 17 against Salford City Reds, kick off 12noon.
