MOORFIELD 1st XI had a tricky home tie against Southport Trinity in the Alliance.

Moorfield skipper John Eccleshall won the toss and elected to bat to save the fielders from the sweltering heat.

Things didn't start too well as opener Peter Donlan fell early doors as did Craig Baxter and then the skipper himself.

Ian Maher stood firm and finished with 40. He was assisted in the middle order by his brother Neil Maher (24), Brian Tobin (37) and Tony Harrison (26) as Moorfield finished on 155 all out.

Southport bowler Chris Maxwell was the pick with five for 40.

In response Southport struggled to get going until number five bat Martin Hodge came to the crease. He top scored with 63 not out.

Others chipped in as Southport passed Moorfield's total with two overs to spare, the score Moorfield 11 Southport 20.

Moorfield 2nd XI didn't fair much better overall against Mossley Hill.

They got off to a good start when skipper Dave Sefton lost the toss and inexplicably put into bat on a dead and slow track. Opener Tom Sellick top scored with a good 57. Dave Sefton also got a good 53 not out.

Others chipped in, notably Mally Buck who scored an excellent 28 in building a stand with Dave. Moorfield finished on a respectable 218 all out.

In response the Mossley Hill openers set about the lacklustre Moorfield attack with gusto. Matt Kelly got 52 and oversees player, Wizasinghas got 76.

When the first wicket fell the score was 145. It was only then that Moorfield got interested.

But it was too late despite taking six wickets Moorfield couldn't prevent a Mossley Hill victory as they scraped home with four balls to spare.

The pick of the Moorfield bowlers were Les Atherton, two for 32, and Karl Fitzgerald, three for 47.

Star of the day was Mark Tansey who is the u13s captain who fielded brilliantly and ran out the free-scoring Wizasinghas in great style, the score Mossley Hill 20 Moorfield 10.

The 3rd XI fared much better on Sunday at Wistaston. Moorfield batted first on a tricky wicket.

Moorfield scored 194 all out with defiant Rob Magee top-scoring on 62, supported by Mike Dean (30).

Wistaston also assisted the Moorfield effort giving away 38 extras. When Wistaston responded they were helped by four dropped catches in the first seven overs.

After a dressing down from skipper Shaun Chambers things began to improve and the Crewe side's wickets began to fall.

Rob Magee got two for 26 but pick of the day was Rachel Tansey with three for 13.

This resulted in Wistaston being all out for 139 giving Moorfield a victory by 55 runs.

Next week sees the 1st XI away at Wavertree and the 2nd XI welcome Ainsdale at Moorfield Road on Saturday.
