CONGLETON Town are in top shape as they prepare to kick off what could be a crucial season.

Due to the re-structuring of Non-League Football, an estimated four promotion spots will be up for grabs in North West Counties Division One.

With the league notoriously difficult to get out of, none of its big boys want to miss out on the golden opportunity.

And that includes the Bears who plan on making it into the mix to bring back Unibond League Football to Booth Street.

Treasurer Ken Mead says they couldn't be better prepared for the challenge, both on and off the field.

"We're very content on all fronts," he explained.

"On the playing side we have a stronger all-round squad than last year and off the field work has begun at the ground.

"Our main sponsors have helped us and we've launched a new Vice Presidents Club.

"We're moving forward.

"We're all feeling good about that and can't wait till the start of the season"

The Bears completed their pre-season with back-to-back victories in the last few days.

Goals from Adam Taylor and Chris Burke earned a 2-1 victory over Division Two side Ashton Town, last Saturday and Mid Cheshire League outfit Crosfields were tanked 4-0 on Tuesday night with Mike Scully (2), Mike Craven and Paul Rowe on target.

"Pre-season has gone well," continued Mead.

"Even in the defeats against Southport and Crewe, we still played some good stuff and we've played six games with four against higher league opposition."

Promotion is certainly the target.

"We're still unsure of exactly how many teams will be promoted," added Mead.

"But this is as good a chance as any of regaining Unibond League status in whatever form that will be."

The Bears embark on that task in 24 hours, entertaining Atherton LR tomorrow.

The derby at Alsager is next on Wednesday night.
