TRAVELLING criminals targeting homes and businesses in Congleton and Alsager face a new high-tech enemy.
Cheshire Police Force is using a mobile CCTV camera to identify criminals by taking pictures of car registration number plates.
The images are linked instantly by computer to the police's national database, providing details of criminals, stolen cars and vehicles with no tax or insurance.
Police officers used the system on Thursday and Friday at the Red Bull traffic lights on
the A34 between Congleton and Alsager.
The CCTV camera is installed in a police van, and the two-day operation was supported by a police motorcyclist, traffic car and Congleton Community Action Team.
"The aim of the system is to target criminals travelling through Congleton Borough to commit crime," said Sgt Gareth Woods.
"It is not there to catch speeders, and it also provides a visible police presence."
