YOUNGSTERS across the Staffordshire Moorlands are making the most of a sporting summer with the help of an action-packed programme from the district council.

The local authority has arranged strings of activities to test children's sporting skills during the holidays.

The last few weeks has seen tennis courses for beginners and experienced players at Draycott Leisure Centre and Abbey View Tennis Club.

Watched over by qualified tennis coach Andy Ball, the classes were well attended at both venues and many of the participants have now joined junior tennis clubs.

Children have also been introduced to indoor climbing, caving and orienteering at special adventure breaks.

The council was also able to organise three days to Upper Limits in Longnor, which attracted young outward-bound fans from the district.

Children in Biddulph have been training for a bronze proficiency award for cricket.

The popular sessions at Biddulph Valley Leisure Centre have shown youngsters the ins and outs of the game, including basic batting, bowling and fielding.

The council's cabinet member for healthy living, Keith Harrison said: "There is so much going on for children across the district to enjoy this summer.

"Our sports sessions are ideal for beginners who want to try their hands at something different and experience players looking for a challenge.

"But the classes are also open to anyone who wants to have fun during the long school holidays."

The council has loads more sporting activities organised for the remaining school holidays, but as places are limited people are advised to book early.
