CREWE CC almost produced the comeback of all time as they gave league leaders Stone a major fright, last Saturday.

Cruising at one stage, Stone narrowly got home by two wickets to end their opponents' fine six-game unbeaten run.

Despite taking them to the brink, Richard Marsh's side will be disappointed not to have set a big total after looking well placed.

Pro Navdeep Singh's fine 51 was a huge factor as Crewe breezed up to 120 for 3 but both his and Tom Gower's departure proved decisive.

Stone professional Mohammed Hussein throttled the innings as he took an impressive 5-wicket haul, conceding just 31 runs off 22 overs.

As a result, Crewe closed on 143 for 8.

Mike Holt got the early breakthrough but Podmore (30) and Hussein (45) put Stone back on course for victory.

Although both were dismissed, the NSSC Division One leaders had it in the bag at 139 for 5 until youngster Martin Dawson picked up his first senior wicket.

Singh then really got the nerves jangling as he picked up two wickets in two balls to reduce the visitors to 142 for 8.

Tailender Frampton kept his cool to steer them home and seal 20 points to Crewe's 7.

In 7th place, Crewe take on Kidsgrove on Saturday and struggling Burslem on Sunday.
