A UNIQUE project for youngsters was launched in Crewe's West End on Monday.

Project 15 brings together around 120 children and teenagers who can enjoy an ambitious programme of sports, play, music and arts for the next three weeks.

The scheme is believed to be a first in the UK and is for 5 to 19-year-olds from a variety of backgrounds.

All those taking part have been referred to Project 15 by a partner agency such as Social Services and Connexions who feel the individual will benefit from participation.

The day starts at 9pm with breakfast, followed by an action packed morning of activity, then lunch.

Choices include football, cricket, athletics, kayaking, orienteering, drama, cheerleading and 'looking good', with the focus on health and fitness, diet and exercise.

Everyone gets an opportunity to try new activities with the older age group encouraged to assist sports coaches and work as leaders

They have been given training in first aid, coaching and child protection and put their own ideas at the planning stage.

All participants will be monitored by the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at Manchester Metropolitan University to determine if there have been any changes in their physical, cognitive and social behaviour with the programme.

Project manager Barry Healy said: "Project 15 will have a serious impact on the lives of the young people involved as well as the wider community.

"We are grateful to a number of sponsors from both the community sector, industry and local businesses."
