WEIRD and wonderful weather conditions over the weekend have had a detrimental affect on many of Lymm Angling Club waters, with fishing slow on Founders Pool and New Pool.

Both are suffering alga blooms which creates the situation by photosynthesis of very high oxygen levels during the day, and very low oxygen levels during the night when levels can be as low as 30% of normal.

These low levels can cause distress in fish which obviously reduces their desire to feed, which is then reflected in the sport they give.

However, worse than the effects of photosynthesis is when an alga bloom dies off quickly. Although present in the water by the ton, each plant is microscopic and as such decomposes very quickly with the decomposition process using up vital oxygen - so much so that it can remove virtually all the oxygen out of the water, killing all the inhabitant fish.

All that we can do is try to get to such situations fast enough with aeration equipment, and often it is the Environment Agency that races to sites with aeration equipment making your licence fee money well spent.

Village Pool, Sandybank Pool, Whitley Pool, Farm Pool and Lymmvale are producing nicely, with good catches reported daily.

Belmont Estate pools are also producing well with Willow Pool the most productive at the moment. Carp of two to four ounces are being caught by the hundred to single maggot, while sweetcorn is producing numerous carp to 8lbs.

Up on the adjacent Beech Pool (The Serpentine), carp are featuring in catches around dusk. I weighed fish for my wife on Friday night, with the biggest being a fully scaled mirror of 12lbs. Earlier, roach, rudd and perch kept her busy.

Belmont Pool has produced a lot of carp to night anglers, with reasonable day time action in early morning and late afternoon. The full range of methods and baits seem to be scoring equally. However, it is those using something a little different as bait that do best.

The booking contact has changed, for those members that wish to book for night fishing on Village Pool, Founders Pool, Monks Moat and Friars Pool. The new contact is Paul Rylance, who can be contacted on 07801 428610. Such bookings are compulsory.

To remind you, the new contact for boat bookings is Mike Church who can be contacted on 0161 456 5640.

On the rivers, anything could be happening following the recent storms. Before travelling it is always advisable to contact the relevant Environment Agency office to get information on current river levels, this may well save a wasted journey.

Despite almost unbearable heat, the juniors stood the course at last weekend's NFA Junior Championships on the River Nene at Peterborough. Although they finished in the lower half of the result sheet they fished in a good spirit of sportsmanship and were a credit to the club.

I can be contacted on 411774.
