IF Warrington Anglers' Association members fancy some tench action try Town Park Lake at Runcorn where volunteers have been busy clearing and making more fishable pegs.

Michael Whittle had his best tench from the water on Sunday which weighed in at 6lbs 2ozs 0drms. Maggot was the successful bait.

Anglers are catching plenty of roach, rudd, skimmers and tench on maggot plus a few carp, mainly lower doubles.

On Sunday, in partnership with the Halton Ranger Service, we are running an open day on the lake where anyone can turn up and have a go at fishing. With qualified coaches on hand it is almost guaranteed that you will catch a fish. There is no charge and tackle and bait is provided.

While fishing for bream Steve Daley saw a dozen double figure carp basking on the surface in the baking sun at Wide Hole and quickly changed his tactics to floating bread.

The piece of Warburton's best medium white sliced was immediately sucked in by a mirror of 15lbs. Steve reckons that his fish was by no means the biggest. Bream to 4lbs are being taken on corn, caster and soft pellet.

Grey Mist Mere is on form no matter what the target species. Ned Barber fished maggot and had roach, tench and some decent perch from a car park swim. Ian Weston fished pole and caster for a mixed catch of tench and roach to over 1lb for an estimated 50lbs.

High Legh produced a 10-8-0 ghost carp for member John Hackett from this popular pocket sized fishery. The rudd and small tench are continuing with their ongoing suicidal assault on any bait put before them. This is an ideal venue for youngsters just starting out in our sport or a good confidence booster if you have experienced a real grueller elsewhere.

At the time of going to press I have not got the full results of the Sensas National Federation of Anglers Championships which took place on Saturday on the River Nene at Peterborough. However, congratulations to our junior team are in order as they did really well by taking the bronze medal. Thanks also to everyone who helped by driving buses, stewarding, organising the youngsters with military precision. We really could not have done it without you.

Now is the last chance to get your Ackers Pit NatWest Young Angler tickets, on sale priced £1.50 from Tom Lenihan at our junior matches or headquarters on Friday nights.
